Instant Energy Boost

Disease is always the result of a loss of cell voltage.

Low-grade metabolic acidosis - or a gradual build up of acid in the body - is a progressive condition that inhibits cellular energy production and many of us have this condition without even knowing it. There are no noticeable symptoms, but as your body retains acid, it depletes bicarbonate stores causing damage to one of the most vital systems in your body, the Carbonic Acid-Bicarbonate buffering system.

This little known system is the body's primary buffer for reducing acidity and maintaining pH homeostasis in the bloodand duodenum, among other tissues, to support proper metabolic function. Having a low acid environment essentially drives the mitochondria - the energy production centres in every cell of your body - to increase oxygen to the cells and produce energy.

Stressful lifestyles, diets high in salt and animal protein and low in fruits and vegetables, and lack of exercise, all contribute to increased acid build up in the body, putting the breaks on our cells' ability to recharge and function at optimal levels.

While changes to nutrition and lifestyle are the best way to improve acidity over the long term, it has also been found that supplementing with sodium bicarbonate (bicarb soda, an ingredient most people have in their home already) can instantly restore the natural carbonic acid buffering system in your body. In fact, athletes use bicarb soda prior to training and competition as a natural performance enhancer, to increase resistance to fatigue and improve performance during high-intensity exercise.

Next time you need a real energy boost, instead of reaching for a quick caffeine fix to get you started, try the following recipe for baking soda lemonade:

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 2 Tbsp fresh organic lemon juice

  • 1/2 tsp organic stevia

  • 1/2 to 1 cup spring water.

Make sure you use a baking soda from your local health food store with no aluminium, or mercury.

In a large glass, mix the lemon juice and stevia together until the stevia is completely dissolved. Then add the baking soda and allow to froth. Add the water and drink immediately.

It's best taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to help “recharge” your cells, or 1-2 hours before exertion with a small high carbohydrate meal.

Enjoy the energy boost and - as always - please consider your own personal health conditions and consult with you treating medical professional before making any changes to nutrition, lifestyle or treatment plans.

PLEASE NOTE: The major side effect associated with large dose sodium bicarbonate supplementation is gastrointestinal distress, with symptoms including nausea, stomach pain and diarrhoea.
